PSA: the MacBook Pro 14-inch’s $20 power brick upsell is probably worth it

The base model MacBook Pro 14 inch is $1,999. If you're considering buying it, you might want to upgrade to the $20 power adapter that provides a 96W power supply. According to MacRumors, the MacBook Pro's configuration page states that you will need a more powerful charger to make the most of the fast charging feature. It can charge your laptop up to 50% in just half an hour.
It seems absurd that Apple taxes people who buy its most affordable (but still very expensive) products. Apple is taxing people who want to buy the new MacBook Pro. You can, but it is a cost you need to pay if your laptop needs quick charging. The exception to this rule is if your charging brick can deliver 100W USB-PD power delivery. Apple told The Verge that Thunderbolt can be used to fast charge your laptop as long as it has enough power. You can skip the upgrade if you already own a powerful power brick.

It may not feel good to encourage Apples nickel and diming, but this is likely the best way to get fast charging. Although there may be a 100W USBPD charging brick for $20 around the world, I doubt it would be trustworthy enough to charge a high-end computer. If it were $20, I wouldn't trust it to not burn down my house. I would choose the upsell.

There is a silver lining to this problem. If you upgrade the base 8 CPU core or 14 GPU core model, the 96W brick will be free. However, if you are in the configuration screen, make sure you check the box.
