Alexandre Lacazette scored his Premier League debut goal this season.
Patrick Vieira stated that Arsenal's final equaliser was "really difficult" to accept as Crystal Palace were held to a draw at Emirates Stadium.
Alexandre Lacazette won deep into injury time to defeat club legend Vieira. Vieira was pouncing after Palace failed in a corner, and Gabriel Martinelli's attempt was saved.
After Vicente Guaita’s diving stop to deny Nicolas Pepe, the Gunners began brightly and led deservedly through Pierre Emerick Aubameyang.
Palace won, and the Gunners lost. Christian Benteke maintained his excellent record against the Gunners by scoring the equaliser.
Jordan Ayew caught Thomas Partey in possession. Benteke shot into the bottom corner.
Palace took the ball from Arsenal again to win the game. Conor Gallagher successfully dispossessed Albert Sambi Lokonga's half. The visitors broke quickly with Odsonne Edouard hitting a shot through the underside bar.
Arsenal's Kieran Tierney nearly equalised the score, but his shot blew against the bar.
It looked like they were about to lose, but substitute Lacazette scored a goal from close range.
Vieira said that it was difficult. "I was very disappointed that I had to concede at the final because the players worked hard and they deserved these three points. They are truly my regrets.
"I loved the character and personality that we displayed. We had the desire to compete in the second half and won the ball very high.
"We wanted to improve this part of the game, which is aggressive. It's part and parcel of Crystal Palace's DNA.
Arsenal were clearly upset that James McArthur, a wild kick at Bukayo Saka, was only booked for late in the first period.
Gunners boss MikelArteta said, "It's clear that he was given a red card." "He didn't intend to play the ball. He hasn't been sent away because of VAR.
Arsenal climb to 12th place with a sixth win, while Palace remains 14th following a third draw.
Vieira so close the famous return
Patrick Vieira played Arsenal with Manchester City and Juventus, but this was his first match against Arsenal as a manager.
Vieira, a three-time Premier League winner with Arsenal and part of the "Invincibles", who went through 2003-04 unbeaten in the top-flight season, returned to face his former team as a manager.
Before kick-off, he received a warm reception from Gunners fans.
The Frenchman said, "I don’t want to pretend that I expected it, but nine years spent at a club such as that and I was part a generation that did well for it, it meant much to me,"
Home fans might have wondered for a long time if Arteta has the right ex-Gunners captain. They may still be curious.
Palace has lost only one of their six games so far. They have impressed even though they lost two late points.
However, Lacazette's late equalizer could have been a big boost for Arsenal's self-confidence, as it extended their unbeaten streak to six games, a match that they had started so well.
Aubameyang played a beautiful opener from a tight angle, but then they became the architects of their own demise.
Both Palace goals were scored by Arsenal midfielders who lost the ball, first Partey, then Sambi Lokonga (half-time replacement for Saka).
Arsenal 2-2 Crystal Palace: Patrick Vieira "disappointed", after his team is denied a win
Palace made those mistakes and deserves their leadership, but that is not to diminish them.
Vieira might regret his decision to replace Edouard, the goalscorer, with James Tomkins, the defender - who had not yet played in a league match this season - eight seconds later.
They held on to the end, and the hosts were able to show good character by finding a way through. Although they may have believed Tierney's shot at the bar was their last chance, they held on to the pressure and Lacazette broke Palace's hearts.
This was his first league goal since April 11.
Arteta said, "He fights to win every ball and he transmits some belief and energy when he comes on,"
