The PS5 by Sony has been the first console to surpass the Nintendo Switch in the US for nearly three years. According to data from The NPD Group, the Switch was outsold by the PS5 in September. For 33 consecutive months, Nintendo's Switch was the bestselling console in America. It even outsold both the PS5 & Xbox Series X in their launch periods.
This extraordinary run is over. Mat Piscatella, NPDs Mat Piscatella, reports that PlayStation 5 was the most-sold hardware platform in September both in units and dollars. NPDs Mat Piscatella explains that PlayStation 5 is the most-sold hardware platform in 2021 in dollars and Nintendo Switch in units.
It is unclear if Sony shipped more consoles in September or if Nintendo had difficulty with Switch supplies or a softer demand before the OLED Switch launch. If Switch demand rises again and Nintendo is able to ship enough OLED models, Nintendo could reclaim the top spot in October.
With more than 10,000,000 sold, the PS5 is Sony's fastest-selling PlayStation. Since its 2017 launch, Nintendo has sold 89 million Switch consoles. Although Microsoft doesn't release sales figures for Xbox hardware, Daniel Ahmad, a senior analyst with Niko Partners, posted estimates via Twitter earlier this year that put the Xbox Series X / S total sale in at 6.6million as of June 30th.
