Dr. Anthony Fauci stated that he has become polarizing during the pandemic as he stands for "science, data and hard facts" rather than conspiracy theories.
Fauci stated that he has stood for science, data and evidence being what we guide ourselves by in an interview with Chris Wallace, Fox News Sunday host. "And I believe people who feel different, who have conspiracy theories or who deny reality, that is looking them in the eyes."
Fauci told Wallace that Wallace was initially viewed as an "authority" on the pandemic, but that he had become a "polarizing figure" over the years. Critics accused Wallace of "sending mixed signals."
Fauci stated that he believed in the truth, and that it was "inconvenient for those who believe in conspiracy theories."
He said, "Those people don't care about me very much, and that's understandable since what I do, which I try very hard to do, is be guided by truth." "And sometimes, the truth is inconvenient for certain people so they react against my words."
Fauci is the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and is considered to be the country's foremost expert on infectious diseases. Fauci has been an integral part of the nation's COVID-19 response. He was a member of President Donald Trump's taskforce and is now the Chief Medical Advisor to Joe Biden.
Wallace asked Fauci if he had done anything that contributed to his becoming a polarizing figure. Fauci replied that he couldn’t because he couldn’t think of anything.
Trump and Fauci were at odds on several occasions over the response to the pandemic. Trump's administration tried to discredit Fauci.
Fauci previously stated that vitriol and death threats have been made against him and his family. His entire family was given personal security in the summer 2020 after threats were made against him by far-right QAnon supporters.
