Politico reported that immigration activists protested a meeting they had with President Joe Biden's top officials on Saturday.
Before the virtual meeting began, activists requested some time to read a statement accusing the administration of "playing politics in human lives" and stated that they could not "come into this conversation in good conscience," according Politico.
Buzzfeed News reported that the walkout was due to the Biden administration's plans to restart a policy that was implemented under former President Donald Trump. This policy required migrants to wait in Mexico as their asylum claims were processed by the courts.
In a Thursday night court filing, the administration stated that it was ready to reinstate the Migrant Protection Protocols (also known as "Remain in Mexico") policy in mid-November.
According to the Washington Post, Biden officials claimed that they had signed contracts to reopen "tent court" border crossings in Brownsville and Laredo, Texas.
After a Trump-appointed judge ordered that the Biden administration reinstate the policy in August, the judge argued that the administration had improperly ended it.
The Post reported that the Supreme Court had upheld the decision and forced the administration to reinstate it.
The Department of Homeland Security didn't immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment but stated to The Post that it was "taking necessary steps in order to comply with the court orders, which requires us reimplement MPP with good faith."
Buzzfeed reported that activists stated in a statement they made before marching out on Saturday: "There is no better version of MPP. It is impossible to make the inhumane and humane, the unfair, fair or breathe life into a fatal program.
Politico was told by a White House official that the Biden Administration had made it clear that MPP was not an immigration policy that we support or agree with.
Mexico must also agree to the reinstatement of the policy, according to the Post.
Politico reported that the "Remain in Mexico” policy played a part in Saturday's walkout. However, immigrants activists are becoming increasingly frustrated by the policies of the Biden administration and claim they are being driven by politics.
Luis Guerra was a strategic capacity officer at Catholic Legal Immigration Network. He was one of the people who left Saturday's meeting.
Guerra stated to Politico that Guerra believes they are afraid of the backlash from anti-immigrant group, and that they will continue to remind them of that fact. "We don’t believe they’re doing all they can to restore asylum at the border the way they claim they are."
Insider reached out to the White House but they did not immediately reply.
