China surprised US officials with August missiles test: Report

According to a report, China tested a hypersonic missile that traveled around the world before reaching its target.
Two people spoke out Saturday to the Financial Times that China had made "astonishing progress in hypersonic weapons" and was far ahead of officials from the United States. A third source said that China wasn't sure how it was possible.

According to China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology, the country has successfully tested 79 Long March 2C missile-carrying rockets. Five people familiar with the launch said that the missile flew in low orbit before heading down towards its target. It missed the target by 24 miles.

John Kirby, press secretary of the Department of Defense, stated that the United States views China as its No. As the two countries try to develop hypersonic weapons, which travel five times faster than sound, it is the "pacing challenge".

Kirby stated that "we have made clear our concern about the military capabilities China continues pursuing, capabilities which only increase tensions within the region and further beyond."

Liu Pengyu, a spokesperson for China, stated that the country does not have a global strategy nor plans to conduct military operations.

Liu stated that "We are not interested in an arms race against other countries." "The U.S. has been using excuses such as the 'China threat' in recent years to justify its hypersonic weapon development and expansion. This has led to an increase in the arms race and severely compromised global strategic stability.
