Norwich City 0-0 Brighton & Hove Albion: Canaries earn second point of season

Shane Duffy returns to take Josh Sargent's shot in the best chance of the game

Norwich won their second point of this season but missed a number of opportunities to punish a sub-par Brighton at Carrow Road.

The Canaries are still searching for their first win in the Premier League this season. Despite their industry and energy, they could not find the knockout punch they were looking for.

Striker Josh Sargent wasted Norwich's best opportunities and his confidence waned as a result.

Brighton climb up the table to fourth place, moving above Manchester United, who lost to Leicester, and Everton who play West Ham this Sunday. They were far from the form that had lifted them to the top of the table prior to the international break.

Norwich fails to score in front of the goal

After scoring the first point in their Premier League campaign two weeks ago at Burnley Norwich did well. They stretched Brighton's defense and forced Robert Sanchez to make a save from Sargent’s deflected shot.

Brighton gained momentum and asserted their dominance over the hosts. Neal Maupay was a constant nuisance for the Norwich defense, scoring four goals in seven games. He appealed in vain to be given a penalty, but was denied by Tim Krul, goalkeeper.

Krul was not judged to have been able to touch Maupay's ball, but he did enjoy Leandro Trossard’s volley just after that, brilliantly tipping the goalbound shot onto the bar.

The best chance Norwich had was created by Brighton when Sanchez ran out of goal and missed his kick. Sargent then had an open goal. The American attempted from 20 yards, but the angle was too weak. Shane Duffy was able to make a round and clear.

Sargent's inept touch made it impossible for Dan Burn to score. Dan Burn was able to slip in and block Sargent's goal.

Manager Daniel Farke pulled Sargent off the pitch after 75 minutes. Norwich took the lead in the second period. His replacement Milot Rashica gave Teemu Pukki a beautiful touch.

The Finn, having missed a chance, couldn't outrun Burn who covered him with another great tackle.

Maupay was close to ruining Norwich's afternoon when he turned Solly Mars's cross over the line in the final five minute.

Brighton will need to improve as Liverpool and Manchester City are both scheduled to play before the month ends, but it was a positive for the south coast to see Tariq Lamptey return to the bench after he sustained hamstring injuries.

Although Norwich's second consecutive point is an improvement after six straight defeats, it did not prove that they are capable of surviving in the top flight.

The league has seen them score just two goals this season, with both of those strikes coming from Pukki. He is without Todd Cantwell and Emi Buendia has left for Aston Villa. This leaves him with very little quality company to share his goal-scoring burden.
