Southampton 1-0 Leeds: Armando Broja gives Saints first league win

Last update on. From the section Premier League
Broja scored two goals for Southampton in an 8-1 Carabao Cup victory over Newport.

Armando Broja scored Southampton's only goal against Leeds, an off-colour and injury-prone team. This was in a game that was largely boring at St Mary's.

After being set up by Nathan Redmond in the second-half, the Slough-born Albanian international striker scored his first English top flight goal.

Although the Saints were the stronger side, they looked more likely to break the deadlock. However, they also had a problem with their cutting edge in front goal.

Their best chance came from corners. Broja was glancing one head wide, flicking on the second, and Mohamed Elyounoussi being inches away from scoring at the back post.

Leeds was missing several senior players like Patrick Bamford and Kalvin Phillips, but only had two shots.

Jack Harrison's drive, deflected over Mohammed Salisu, was their closest. Daniel James had a chance to score after he had nipped in and claimed the ball from Salisu in his box.

Southampton now has seven points and is in 15th place. This is one point and two league places better than Leeds.

Saints finally make their march

This was not a game that was for neutrals.

However, Ralph Hasenhuttl, the Saints' boss, had made similar comments in his pre-match external-link press conference in which he said that the game "would not be a five-course dinner".

Both sides were without star performers, with Leeds missing James Ward-Prowse (who was suspended in December 2018) and Leeds being without Raphinha after his brazilian exploits on Friday.

Southampton had the right attributes - cohesion and determination, discipline, cohesion, determination, and composure.

They lost Danny Ings in the summer, and have struggled to find a good finish without him.

Broja however has a raw talent that Chelsea borrowed from them. He could very well become the man they need for this campaign.

He finished the move with a perfect finish, soaring high past Illan Meslier, ending a Leeds attack that had broken down. Nathan Redmond was released to offer a low cross invitingly into the feet of the striker.

Leeds was outshot 19-3 by Leeds, and the home team would have been mad if they hadn't taken all three points, particularly with Leeds being so out of sorts.

Leeds were, however, not the brave, bold side Marcelo Bielsa introduced to the Premier League last year, but a pale imitation that desperately needed regularly fit players and an spark to ignite their campaign.
