Seattle Seahawks placing QB Russell Wilson on injured reserve; RB Chris Carson out vs. Steelers

Coach Pete Carroll announced Friday that Russell Wilson will be placed on injured reserve by the Seattle Seahawks while he recovers from finger surgery.
Wilson, who was injured in the right middle finger by the Los Angeles Rams on Oct. 7, will be out at least three times. He had surgery last Friday. He could be back in Week 10 with the Green Bay Packers.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Wilson will be back in four to eight weeks.

Wilson's streak ending at 149 consecutive regular season starts will be ended. It was the sixth longest streak of regular-season starts among NFL quarterbacks, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

On Sunday, Geno Smith will be making his first start as a quarterback since 2017, when he takes on the Steelers. The Seahawks will host the Saints & Jaguars after Pittsburgh. They'll then be on their way in Week 9.

Wilson was allowed to practice the week before the IR move. He was listed by the Seahawks as a participant Wednesday but not Thursday.

Due to a neck problem that flared up during the Rams game, Chris Carson, running back for the Steelers, was also ruled out.

Monday was a positive day for Carson, with Carroll stating that Carson had made a "big change" over the weekend. He said Friday that Carson felt better at the beginning of the week, but that he hadn't made enough progress since then.

"It is better to get him back, but we must not rush it back. So we will take our time. Carroll said that Carson could be put on injured reserve because it is delicate. "He has a problem in his neck so we have to do it right, so we will take care of him. This seems like the right choice.

Alex Collins ran back against the Rams, gaining 72 yards in 17 touches. As change-of-pace tailbacks, DeeJay Texas and Travis Homer are also available in Seattle.

Carroll stated that Rashaad Penny, running back, will be available to play, barring any setbacks. He'll be eligible to go off IR next Wednesday.

Carroll stated, "He's really hungry for play and help us."

Cedric Ogbuehi, the Seahawks' backup tackle (chest/biceps), was also eliminated. All other players are not given game designations. This means that Wilson, Carson, and Ogbuehi are all considered fit enough to play.
