Uefa referees boss calls for offside rule clarity after contentious Kylian Mbappe goal

Mbappe was adjudged onside after he kicked the ball under Unai Simon, Spain's goalkeeper

Fifa and International Football Association Board (Ifab), met with Uefa's chief refeeing officer regarding the offside rule.

New debate was ignited by Kylian Mbappe’s controversial goal for France against Spain on Saturday.

Roberto Rosseti states that Uefa believes there is a way to improve the wording of the rule "for the spirit"

Rosseti stated that Anthony Taylor made the right decision based upon the law as it exists and its official interpretation.

France striker Mbappe was offside but was later played onside. Eric Garcia, a Spain defender, had made contact with the ball slightly when he tried to intercept Theo Hernandez's pass.

France won the Nations League with the goal. Garcia's touch initiated a new phase of play. Fifa rules state that a player in an offside location receiving the ball deliberately from an opponent is not considered to be an advantage.

Rosseti believes Taylor made the right decision but he thinks there are ways the game's legislators can improve its rules.

"However, the case shows that the current interpretation is not in accord with the spirit and law, which is to stop any player from taking advantage of their offside position.

"Uefa believes there are ways to improve wording to align it with the spirit of both the offside law, and the spirit of the game."

Ifab will hold a meeting of technical advisory panels on 27 October.
