Get tissues and rosé ready: Adele is back to make you life at least 30% more dramatic. Adele's first studio album in six-years, 30 is now available with a video that is in direct dialogue with her last megahit.
Adele teamed with Xavier Dolan, a French-Canadian director, to create the visuals for "Easy On Me". The story is a direct reflection of the arc of the earlier video. It even includes the fact that the singer was unable to get phone reception in the beginning. She looks through huge sunglasses at her iPhone and says "Oh for God's sake." "There we are again." She's at least got rid of her flip phone.
This time, she is leaving the country and heading for home.
She drives along with a happy couple who are just getting married. (Since her last album was 2015's 25, she has been divorced from the father of her son, who is 9 in a matter of days). They chatter about their road trip and she sees pages of sheet music flying out of the car window. The cinematic black-and white film explodes into saturated colour halfway through. This is an unsubtle metaphor for what you need right now.
It's not a wind-machine stomper like "Hello," but it is a gentle, self-aware and deceptively fragile song for getting back on your feet after dealing with real shit. You can also trust Adele to provide a soundtrack.
On Nov. 19, 30, will be available
