Dan Snyder deciding to honor Sean Taylor NOW is a disgrace

In September, the New York Giants announced that Michael Strahan's number would be retired by them on November 28. Jeanie Buss, Lakers owner, immediately announced that Pau Gasol's No. 16 would be sent to the rafters. Since 2019, the Oakland As have been planning Dave Stewarts jersey retire ceremony. It will finally take place on May 23, 2019.

Washington Football Team will be retiring number 21. This Sunday, Sean Taylor will be retiring at No. 21. The team made the announcement on Thursday.

Taylor was 24 years old when he was just beginning to realize the potential of a Hall of Fame career. Washington fans hold his memory close to their hearts. His legacy is so strong, Clinton Portis stated that Taylor's locker was taken by the team and Taylor's love for the game vanished. This led him to hang up his boots.

Since Taylor's death, no one has worn 21 Washington shirts. It was long past time that the number of retirement should be made official.

This is an example of franchise incompetence. Washington fans will be eager to attend this event, which theyve been looking forward to for many years. It is a time to remember Washington's greatness and to mourn the loss that has been weighing on their hearts for over a decade.

The decision to retire Taylor's number is not made by Taylor alone. It was taken in the midst of 650,000 emails that were reviewed as part a probe into Snyder's franchise. The only emails the public has seen so far are those that led to Jon Gruden losing his job as coach for a completely different team.

Snyder and his front-office henchmen have clearly been searching for a BREAK GLASS in CASE of EMERGENCY type of box to break open. This was not only due to the emails but also because federal authorities raided their practice facility as part of a criminal investigation into their head athletic trainer.

Taylors No. 21 was found in that emergency box. 21 jersey was found in the emergency box.

It would have been quite cynical for the organization to announce this week that Taylor's number was being retired. Or later in the season, such as Dec. 12, when the Cowboys visit the nation capital. This was not a bad franchise.

The franchise is definitely rotten. Although they may have changed their nickname to a racial slur from the team, they are still the team that was last in the NFL that integrated. They also waited until Bobby Mitchell died to retire his number. Then, as a publicity stunt, they renamed the stadium seating level that had been named after George Preston Marshall, who was the original owner of Washington's football team. This was until 1962 when the federal government gave them an ultimatum: integrate or lose their D.C. lease.

Mitchell was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1983. This meant that Washington could have given Mitchell his due at any time during the remaining 37 years of Washington's life. They didn't. Snyder didnt. Snyder didn't.

The same strategy is used by Taylor to escape the 650,000 emails. This won't work because the 650,000 emails will still be available on Monday after Sunday. Snyder and his subordinates are merely using the legacy of a beloved Black man to make ineffective PR tools.

It is distasteful, shameful, and deeply symbolic of Snyders ownership. Taylors memory deserves better. Fortunately, it is not a capricious billionaire that decides when and how Taylors fans or former teammates will honor him. They have done so for years and will continue doing so even after Snyders reign ends.
