Elementary school cancels Halloween parade due to racial insensitivity

A Washington elementary school has cancelled its annual Halloween parade in 2021, after its faculty decided that it "marginalizes" students of color who don't celebrate the holiday. According to a statement by the school,
According to the school district, the decision by the Racial Equity team at Benjamin Franklin Day Elementary School was made after five years of discussions.

A spokeswoman for Seattle Public Schools stated that there are many community events and neighbourhood events where families and students can celebrate Halloween. "Historically, the Pumpkin Parade has marginalized students of color who don't celebrate the holiday. These students requested to be isolated from campus during the event.

TRUMP COSTUMES ARE OUT OF FASHION IN THIS HALLOWEEN

According to the statement, the decision was solely about protecting students of color and had nothing to do the pandemic.

It stated that staff was committed to replacing the Pumpkin Parade, in accordance with SPS's unwavering dedication to students of color, particularly African American males.

According to Stanley Jaskot, Benjamin Franklin Day Elementary School Principal, Halloween can be a difficult issue for schools all across the country.

"Yes, this event marginalized students of color. Jaskot stated that many of our students had previously chosen an alternative activity in the library to the pumpkin parade. "This was a very isolating situation that did not reflect our values of creating an inclusive and safe environment for all students, especially those of color and students who are sensitive to the excitement and noise of the parade.

According to the report, parents were informed of the decision Oct. 8 and instructed to not allow their children to wear costumes at school.
