This is a great opportunity to secure Hyatt award stays through March 2022. World of Hyatt will soon offer peak and off-peak pricing for bookings starting in October 2021 (we don't know the exact date yet), for March 2022 and beyond.

World of Hyatt had originally planned to offer peak and off-peak pricing starting in March 2020. Due to the pandemic, that was delayed until July 2021 because of the drop in travel demand. Due to the long time it took for travel demand to recover, this was delayed further until March 2022.

Here are the details of this new World of Hyatt award pricing.

Hyatt Introducing Peak & Off-Peak Awards

World of Hyatt will introduce peak and off-peak pricing for bookings starting in October 2021 and stays beginning March 2022. There will be three redemption points under this structure:

What will the Hyatt Peak and Off-Peak dates be regulated?

Here's what World of Hyatts leadership said about peak and off-peak dates.

As soon as the nights are available, free night redemption rates will be identified by peak, standard or off-peak. They won't change once they are posted, unlike Marriott where it is dynamic).

The geographic market determines the pricing of peak and off-peak properties. This means that all properties in the same area will follow the same calendar.

A property cannot designate a minimum or maximum number for peak or off-peak nights.

Standard redemption rates will be used for the majority of days in the year.

Hyatt will introduce a calendar that allows members to view award rates over a longer time period. This is at least one of the positives.

Hyatt doesn't do much to regulate peak- and off-peak dates

What happens to existing Hyatt Reservations

World of Hyatt members who have an existing award booking that is for a night that goes off-peak will be refunded the difference. Members will not be charged an additional fee if their award booking is modified to peak.

You will be charged the current award rates if you make a change to an award after the system has been in effect.

What happens to free night certificates?

Hyatt currently issues category-specific, free night certificates. Some of these are valid at Categories 1-7 and Categories 1-4. These certificates will be valid even during peak season. The maximum points value of certificates could increase.

Why is Hyatt making these changes?

If you are wondering why World of Hyatt switched to peak pricing and off-peak pricing, it all boils down to the economics of hotel loyalty programmes.

Hyatt manages its hotel portfolio, but it doesn't actually own the majority. Instead, hotels are owned by individual owners who have their own profit goals.

The amount that Hyatt will reimburse you for when you redeem points at Hyatt properties can be very different:

World of Hyatt compensates hotels for overcrowding, or nearly emptying, rooms.

World of Hyatt will reimburse the hotel if the hotel isn't full, even if you are occupying a room that would otherwise be empty. This is just a little more than the marginal cost.

Although peak and off-peak prices will likely reflect seasonality in hotels, I expect them to reflect Hyatts redemption cost, which are more about occupancy levels rather than hotel rates.

When a hotel is full, Hyatts redemption rates will be higher

My Take On World Of Hyatt Changes

Hyatt's decision to introduce peak and off-peak pricing is bad news for most members. People who maximize their hotel points often redeem in peak season to get the best value.

Although this is undoubtedly a bad development, I dare to say that it could have been worse. Most of the time I redeem standard room free nights awards, which are increasing by maximum 5,000 points per day.

Although it's not ideal, I feel that things could have been better. World of Hyatt will still be valuable to me, especially as a Globalist Member.

Hyatt doesn't regulate how many nights can go peak or off-peak. This is my biggest concern. I am concerned that hotels may have only peak dates half the year and standard rates the second half. There will be no off-peak periods.

We will have to wait to see how it is implemented. Although I don't believe that Hyatt hotels will act in good faith, I do think they are acting in good faith. But you never know.

World of Hyatt remains a great program in my opinion

Earning Hyatt Points Is Still Easy

World of Hyatt is a valuable resource because of how simple it is to access the points.

There are many credit cards that can earn Hyatt Points. You can earn World of Hyatt Points with the World of Hyatt Credit Card and the World of Hyatt Business Credit Card. It makes a huge difference to be able to transfer credit card points to Hyatt.

This post will cover everything you need about Hyatt points and credit cards.

Hyatt offers discounts or bonuses on points purchased, and this is just the beginning.

Bottom line

World of Hyatt will soon offer peak and off-peak pricing. These changes will be effective for bookings starting in October 2021 and stays beginning in March 2022.

This is a great time to make any speculative hotel bookings next year, where you are concerned that hotels might be subject to high prices. Once we know the official date, I'll keep you posted.

Do you have any speculative World of Hyatt bookings made before peak award pricing is implemented?
