He told NOS that he couldn't claim to be completely happy with the current situation. "But that's football, and I'll need to learn how to deal with it. I am a fighter.

"I must stay positive and keep working hard to make it better. In recent years I played a lot, was fit and did well. It is a new experience that requires some adjustment.

"I was looking forward to the next step, and then it happens. It's very difficult."

Louis van Gaal, coach of the Netherlands, said that he was worried about Wijnaldum's inactivity with his club. However Wijnaldum was selected to the national team for the World Cup qualifiers.

Wijnaldum was suspended from the win over Latvia, but he captained the side for 90 mins in Monday's 6-0 win against Gilraltar.

Wijnaldum will be back in club action on Friday when PSG hosts Angers.
