Frances Haugen will be meeting with Facebook's external policy review panel. Haugen is a former employee of Facebook who made public her concerns last week. After the whistleblower accepted an invitation from the board, Facebook's Oversight Board announced Monday it would meet with Haugen over the next few weeks.
The Oversight Board expressed appreciation for the opportunity to talk with Ms. Haugens and gather information that could help push for more transparency and accountability on Facebook through our case decisions, and recommendations in a blog post.
I accepted an invitation to tell the Facebook Oversight Board what I learned working there. Facebook lies to the board numerous times, and I look forward to telling the truth to them. Frances Haugen (@FrancesHaugen) October 11, 2021
The Oversight Board announced the meeting with Haugen and mentioned its interest in cross check, a Facebook program that allows some prominent users to bypass the platform's rules. The board stated that it was specifically looking into whether the company had been forthcoming in answering questions about the cross-check system. It plans to share its findings in an October report.
The Wall Street Journal published an investigative series on Facebook last month that revealed the existence of the program. These reports were based on documents that Haugen provided at the time, which was an unrevealed source to the paper.
