Lionel Messi, a South American soccer player, became the first to score 80 international goals when his Argentina team beat Uruguay in World Cup qualifying.

Captain Messi opened scoring for his side by scoring with a floated cross, which somehow evaded goalkeeper.

Rodrigo de Paul doubled Argentina’s lead before the half-time break, and Lautaro Martinez added a third.

"We had a great time. Messi said that everything worked out perfectly.

"Uruguay are waiting for you, and they create danger. We found space once we had the first goal, and then the other goals began to appear."

Argentina is now unbeaten in 24 games and their latest win continues to put pressure on Brazil in South America's World Cup qualification group.

After a draw with Colombia on Sunday, Brazil won 2-0 to narrow the gap between Argentina and Brazil at the top of the 10-team team group.
