San Francisco 49ers place TE George Kittle on injured reserve

Ryan Clark believes Kyler Murray will be the Cardinals' best player after their matchup against the 49ers. (0:58).
George Kittle has been placed on injured reserve by the San Francisco 49ers. This is due to a calf injury.

Since inflicting the injury on Week 1 against Detroit Lions, Kittle has been able to play through it. However, he was not able to practice and was considered questionable for Sunday's match against the Arizona Cardinals.

This is another significant change for the 49ers offense. Trey Lance, a rookie quarterback, will be starting the game against Jimmy Garoppolo who has a calf injury.

Kittle is a two-time Pro Bowler and ranks second among 49ers receivers with 19 receptions this season. He also has 227 yards.

Kittle is now out of action for three straight years due to injuries. Kittle missed two games with a knee injury in 2019, and eight with injuries to his foot and knee last season.

San Francisco activated Nate Sudfeld, a practice squad member, to serve as Lance's back-up. Tanner Hudson, a tight end, was also elevated to the active roster.

To take Kittle's place on the active roster, the Niners promoted wide receiver Travis Benjamin to the practice squad.
