Scotland 3-2 Israel: Scott McTominay nets dramatic winner in World Cup qualifier

Scott McTominay's goal in stoppage time was his first for Scotland

Scott McTominay caused chaos at Hampden when he won against Israel in stoppage time to keep Scotland on track for the World Cup qualifying playoffs.

After Eran Zahavi's stunning free-kick, and Munas Dabbur finishing twice, the Manchester United midfielder scored his first Scotland goal. It was a thrilling match.

John McGinn had briefly equalized with a brilliant strike, before Lyndon Dykes (having had a weak penalty saved) volleyed an equaliser after a VAR-check after the break.

McTominay took advantage of Scotland's concerted pressure to win, leaving his side with two wins in a play-off spot. Next up were trips to the Faroes Islands Islands and Moldova.

With three games remaining in the race to be runners-up to Denmark, Steve Clarke's men have won victory over Israel.

It was fitting that Scotland had its first full house at Hampden since June 2017, when England visited. This was in stark contrast to the dejection felt by the fans following a difficult and frustrating first 45 minutes.

After just five minutes, Zahavi scored a fantastic free-kick in the top corner for his 26th goal in 28 caps.

Scotland's seventh match with Israel in three year should not have been surprised by the PSV Eindhoven attacker’s impressive finishing ability. The free kick was an unnecessary concession by Jack Hendry and the errors kept mounting up before the break.

McTominay, who was returning from injury to replace Grant Hanley in the back three, was caught out by an overlong ball. Only Manor Solomon's poor handling when clean through allowed Scotland to score.

Scotland was stunned by the goal. They had threatened Che Adams in just one minute, before losing all momentum. Simple passes went stale and hosts failed to create coherent attacks.

Scotland needed something special. McGinn provided it. Ofir Marciano, former Hibernian goalkeeper, was unable to keep up with McGinn's sublime curling finish at 20 yards. This was after Andy Robertson's flowing move.

Within two minutes, Scotland was trailing once more. Their undoing was further proven by McTominay's second free kick. Dabbur stabbed home after Craig Gordon had denied Dor Peretz's attempt.

Dykes could have made sure that the sides went in level at half-time, but Peretz got in on Billy Gilmour when he slid in to Gilmour's punch clearance just inside the box.

However, QPR's striker - Scotland’s match-winner in the previous two games – sent his penalty straight down to the middle. Marciano stayed there and saved his foot.

Scotland, knowing the cost of a draw to their qualification hopes, were greatly improved after the break. Dykes got quick credit when he scored Robertson's cross.

The Tartan Army was not at ease with this decision. Referee Szymon Maarciniak initially disallowed the goal due to a high challenge on Ofri Azar, but he reversed the decision after consulting the pitchside monitor.

Scotland were grateful to Gordon for keeping them from falling behind, Zahavi being denied by the goalkeeper. But Clarke's side had momentum and Tierney crossed on Dykes' head eighty yards away. Marciano shoveled clear.

After Tierney's cross-fool, Dykes gave the Israel goalkeeper a free kick for a challenge.

Scotland continued to pile on the pressure, but agony beckoned when McGinn was stopped in the final stages by Marciano. McTominay then chose the right moment to open an international account.

Jack Hendry looked at McTominay from a corner of the Israel box. Hampden was delighted to see McTominay do the same.

Andy Robertson is the Man of Match

As the left-back, Scotland's turnaround was driven by a true captain's performance

What have we learned?

Scotland's ability for supporters to go through the mill is unmatched, but the ending scenes made it all worthwhile.

Clarke's side made a remarkable comeback, showing tenacity and sheer determination in the second half. Their first-half performance was as poor as any they have ever played under him.

It took a lot of courage and perseverance to turn the tide. The hosts took on Israel's side with Robertson running forward and Billy Gilmour in midfield.

There are still defensive issues - McTominay is best suited as a centre-back. These are not for today.

Match stats

McTominay's 94th minute goal was Scotland's first stoppage time winner since Stephen McManus's win against Liechtenstein in September 2010.

After Mo Johnston who scored five in September 1988, Dykes is the second Scotland player to have three consecutive World Cup qualifiers.

For the first time since 1998, Scotland has won three consecutive home World Cup qualifiers.

McGinn (10) has scored more home goals during qualifying matches (World Cup/Euros), than any other player from Scotland.

Israel's Eran Zhavi (7 goals) has been the most successful player in the European World Cup 2022 qualification. He also scored in three of his previous appearances against Scotland at Hampden.

What's next?

Scotland will try to win the two victories against the Faroe Islands at Torshavn on Tuesday (19.45 BST), and Moldova away next month. If they fail to win, they have another chance when they finish the campaign at home in Denmark.
