Ryan Broom scored his first goal since his Peterborough loan move to Plymouth at the beginning of the season

After a convincing victory over Burton Albion, Plymouth Argyle was named League One's top team.

Ryan Hardie, Argyle's top-scoring player, landed a seventh-minute effort on the bar. Conor Grant soon followed with a well-taken effort at the box's edge to open the scoring.

Ryan Broom was set up by Hardie to side-foot in second position from close range, just before the break.

Burton was saved by Lucas Akins when he turned and shot low from the box's edge into the bottom corner. This Albion effort was rare, but the hosts won the victory they deserved.

Argyle's win saw Ryan Lowe's team leapfrog Sunderland and Wigan Athletic to take the top spot.

This is Devon's highest league position since May 2010, when they were relegated to the Championship.

The Pilgrims were unstoppable throughout the first half. Kieran Agard, who was starting a league match for the first time since 659 days, saw a swiveling volley go just wide after 2 minutes. Hardie, strike partner, hit the frame of goal shortly after completing some excellent work in the penalty area.

Grant's opening goal was based on an excellent passing move. However, the hosts were not able to score as Hardie's 27-minute header was saved by Ben Garratt at far post. This happened three minutes before Thomas Hamer's shot with Burton's first attempt.

Burton was caught by Argyle on the counter-attack. Michael Cooper, keeper, gathered a corner. Hardie was set free with his long throw. The Scot raced into the area to set Broom up.

After the break Burton showed improvement, but Akins' goal was against the flow of play. Argyle had a second chance to win the game when Jordan Garrick made a good save.

Akins was able to get in behind the Pilgrims defense and had a cross taken away with 20 minutes remaining. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's men then went in search for an equaliser.

They almost won a point, but Daniel Jebbison missed an opportunity to tie the game with five minutes remaining. He shot low into the side-netting after finding some space in his box.
