According to a Facebook press release, the company announced that it would be clamping down on anyone using the platform for the sale of land in the Amazon rainforest. This announcement was made following a BBC report which revealed hundreds of acres of protected forest land available for sale on Facebook Marketplace.

The company stated that by using this database and other complementary information sources, we create another obstacle for those trying to list these lands in Marketplace.

CNN reported that while the name of the international organization was not clear in the press release, CNN stated that it would use the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) to determine if users have violated their policies.

This announcement is somewhat optimistic and caps an extremely difficult week for Facebook. The internet went wild Monday when Facebook, along with its sibling platforms Instagram (and WhatsApp), went offline for hours. A whistleblower who testified before Congress about Facebook's hidden research regarding its harmful effects on teens also brought down the company.
