Jonas Eidevall: The new Arsenal boss firing Gunners to the top of the WSL

Eidevall joined Arsenal at June
Jonas Eidevall had a nearly perfect start in life in north London.

The 38-year old is a thoughtful manager with clear ambition and has made a significant impression on his brief stint in the Women's Super League.

After arriving from Rosengard in June and transforming Arsenal into a high-energy side that is front-footed, free-scoring, and energy-hungry, the Swede has been able to achieve a 100% start in the WSL season. The Gunners are currently at the top of the league with maximum 12 points.

Eidevall spoke out about the topic as part of a lengthy interview with BBC Sport. He also talked about his early memories, Joe Montemurro's influence, and his hopes for regaining Arsenal's place at the top in women's soccer.

"I needed somewhere to channel and ignite my passion."

As a 23-year old, Eidevall began his coaching career as an assistant at Lund's Swedish men's soccer team. After three years as assistant at Swedish men's team Lund, Eidevall became manager and went on winning numerous league titles with Rosengard.

"I dreamed of being a great player, but I was not talented enough."

"I was not given enough direction, and I needed somewhere to channel the passion I had for the game. I realized that coaching was my forte.

"I didn’t know much about the game at first, but I learned a lot and listened to people.

"I love it because it allows me to interact with people. I enjoy helping people understand me. You can give back something if you have confidence in someone.

"You can win gold, but you get silver for free"

Until Tuesday's loss to Barcelona, the Women's Champions League's reigning champions, Eidevall - who hails from Boras in south Sweden - had won all of his games as Gunners boss.

"Wherever I'm from, winning is what drives me."

"There is a saying in my town: "You win gold, but you get silver for free." This can sometimes be a burden, since winning is the only thing you have to do. But these are all principles I want to bring to Arsenal.

"There are no guarantees, but you can look in the mirror and say that you gave your best to make the day a success.

"I'm grateful for Joe Montemurro"

Joe Montemurro spent only four years at Arsenal, and Eidevall is now the Juventus boss.

"I had the privilege of meeting Joe while he was coaching in Sweden - I was so impressed with his personality.

"I feel extremely privileged to be able to work alongside a team that he has known for so many years.

"His methods, his group and the way he educated the players were great.

The right path for 'Ambitious Arsenal'

Eidevall managed a busy summer of transfers. He saw many new faces arrive in London, including Nikita Paarris (England striker) and Tobin Heath (USA star).

"The club was very motivated to change and my ambition was a major factor in my coming here.

"The board wants to invest and regain its historical position, which attracted me to the club.

"We have a great team, and we've made some fantastic signings. One of the most important aspects is that we kept many of our players from last year.

"In football, it's easy to concentrate on new players. But sometimes, the best signings for clubs is to keep the players who are already performing well in that environment."

"We must beat the top teams in order to win trophies"

Arsenal have not been defeated in domestic competitions this season.

The Gunners are off to a great start in the WSL campaign. They have won four out of four and scored 16 goals, beating Chelsea.

"I want Arsenal to be seen as a truly, really great team.

"I want our pressing more intense and aggressive, and I want to have the ability to shift momentum against top teams.

"Arsenal played some good football last season but didn't perform well against top teams like Chelsea or Manchester City." You must win against the best teams if you want to win trophies.
