Britain's Emma Raducanu was defeated in straight sets at Indian Wells by Aliaksandra Snovich of Belarus. This was her first Grand Slam match.

Raducanu, world number 22, was seeking an 11th consecutive victory. He had qualified for the US Open last month.

Sasnovich, who is ranked 100th worldwide, defeated the 18-year old 6-2,6-4 in round 2 of the BNP Paribas Open.

Raducanu, who was given a bye in the first round, will next play in Moscow at the Kremlin Cup within 10 days.

After her US Open win, the Briton had to compete without Andrew Richardson as her coach.

After the match, she spoke out to BBC Sport saying that they had shared many great memories.

Raducanu was a great opponent for Sasnovich, holding to love in the first game in front of around 4,000 people at the night session.

However, a loose game ensued and her 27-year old opponent was playing excellent defensive tennis. The US Open champion was forced to make too many mistakes.

Raducanu was anxious to end rallies quickly on the slow court. Sasnovich broke once more to love and won the first set.

It was Raducanu's first loss since Clara Tauson's three-set loss in Chicago's Challenger final on 22 August.

Sasnovich also broke first in the second round, showing off her attacking side.

Raducanu was then penalized twice for double-faults in the next game. Raducanu began to find his composure and was able to take a 4-2 lead.

However, the improvement was temporary and Sasnovich won four of the last four matches to win a straight-set victory.

In the third round, Simona Halep, a two-time Grand Slam champion, will face the Belarusian.

Raducanu stated: "I believe Aliaksandra played an excellent match. She was better than me today, so she should win.

"I am glad that today's events happened, so that I can learn from them and use it as a learning experience.

"There will be disappointment following any loss. Because I am so inexperienced, I didn't put any pressure on myself.
