Many of us at The Verge have been having issues with Instagram, but it seems that the problem may be more widespread than we thought. According to a Facebook statement,
Facebook stated in a tweet that they are aware that some users have difficulty accessing their apps and products. We are working quickly to get things back on track and apologize for any inconvenience.
It is not clear what the problem might be. Sometimes, my Instagram feed refreshes, but other times I get an error. However, I haven't had any issues with Facebook in the last few minutes.
These problems are the result of a huge outage that occurred on Monday. It took down Facebook, Instagram Messenger, WhatsApp, Messenger and Oculus for almost six hours. Facebook posted an explanation the next day explaining that the backbone linking the company's data centers around world had been inadvertently disabled. It was so severe that the outage even caused internal system failures, forcing employees to use company-provided Outlook accounts instead to communicate.
