Crunchyroll visited New York Comic Con 2021in person and virtually this year to present the first trailer for Black Lotus. It was produced by Ultraman's anime studio Sola Digital Arts and directed by Ghost in The Shell: Standalone Complexs Kenji Kaimiyama and Ultramans Shinji Aramikki. The series is set in 2032 after Watanabes BladeRunner 2049 short Black Out. It follows Elle (Arisa Schida/Jessica Henwick), a young woman who discovers she's a replicant and is soon thrust into a dangerous underground world ruled by wealthy elite and cruel thugs.
The trailers are light on plot except for the fact that Elle is determined to take revenge for all she has done and will kill everyone (they mostly left vague). It's heavy on vibes and it feels at least very Blade Runner. The shows do a good job at capturing the essence of the original Blade Runners world. They are neon-soaked, but still dark and dingy, where 2049 was a little more vibrant. Add in a moody synth soundtrack, action and a Voight Kampff test, and you have a show that can do the Blade Runner walk.
We'll just have to wait and see if the show talks the talk when Black Lotus starts airing simultaneously on Adult Swims Toonami block with its English-language dub and on Crunchyroll in Japanese with subtitles, starting November 13.
