Jesse Lingard: Man Utd forward says he needs 'regular football' to secure place in England's 2022 World Cup squad

Jesse Lingard said that he needed "regular soccer" to fulfill his dream of playing for England in the 2022 World Cup.
Manchester United forward, who has been on the bench three times, has played 45 minutes of Premier League football this season.

He scored against West Ham and Newcastle, scoring a late win at the London Stadium after he had spent the second half last season on loan to Hammers.

Lingard was selected in Gareth Southgate’s preliminary squad for Euro 2020 after a fine spell in east London, but he did not make it to the final cut.

Following the tournament, the 28-year old returned to international football and scored twice in England's 4-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Andorra at Wembley.

Lingard was retained in the squad for Saturday's reverse fixture and the three-day visit to Hungary.

He admits that he must continue to play first-team football in order to retain his spot in the squad and to earn a place in Southgate’s squad for Qatar.

He said, "Obviously, the World Cup remains a long way off but you still need regular football."

"I was so close about going to the Euros, and I think it plays a huge role and it's an important factor. It plays a major role in determining whether you are playing more than 20 or 25 games.

"I'm not doing any damage at the moment - if you keep performing well and doing so well, you never know what might happen. So I stay confident and keep going when I get the chance to pitch.

"You want to play. As a sub, I am always available to play. When called up, I'm always available to help.

"It's one the things that I'm going through right now, but I think based on recent performances we'll see a shift in the next few days."

Lingard claims that he missed out on England's Euro 2020 finals, which is what drives his desire to be in Southgate's World Cup squad should the Three Lions win qualification.

When asked if he was motivated by England's win in Euro 2020, he said "Yes, it does."

It's always difficult. It's always hard to believe that you can achieve anything with hard work and belief, considering where I was for a time.

"I was disappointed that I missed out, but I was still there to support the boys through thick or thin."

"They had a great opportunity after reaching the final, but we need to quickly move on and prepare for the next season.

"I have been with England for many decades and I've seen camps change over time, but I believe the camps I've been to now are the best.

"The team spirit and the togetherness, Gareth has really set us up well. We're confident in the games we're entering and are trying to get through the qualifiers.

Man Utd: "Sancho" will be a success

Lingard's absence at United has been significant, but his club-mate Jadon Sáncho has struggled to make a mark since he moved to Old Trafford this summer from Borussia Dortmund.

Southgate acknowledged last week that Sancho's performance since joining United wasn't worthy of an England call up, but that he still believed in the winger.

Lingard stated that Sancho will need time to adapt.

"Jadon has been around for a while, so he is well-versed in football and knows how difficult the Premier League can be. He is adapting. We've seen glimpses. He will only get better. We are confident and hopeful that Jadon will succeed.

We all know Jadon is a top-class player and one of the most promising young talents in the country at the moment. It is always going to be difficult at a club as big as Manchester United.

"But Jadon, a professional, has been playing the game for a long time. I feel like he is slowly adapting and you can see glimpses in his previous games.

"We can see it in training week in and week out. He will succeed at United, there is no doubt in my mind.
