The TV manufacturer TikTok announced that it has launched an app to support LG's 2020 and 2021 smart TVs. The app was launched on the webOS 5.0 models and webOS6.0 models, with a firmware upgrade that began rolling out October 7th. It will also be available for older 2019 TVs over the next few months.
According to a TikTok representative, the app will be launched in Germany, France and the UK. This is notable considering that TikToks smart TV apps on Android TVs, Samsung TVs and Fire TVs all focus on the same European countries. TikTok also released a limited version of its app for Fire TV devices in the US last year. We reached out to TikTok and LG to find out which regions the smart TV app will be made available.
TikTok's optimized for portrait-orientated mobile viewing means that it will not look well on living room TVs. Protocol reported that TikTok intends to reach a wider audience through its smart TV apps. It also wants to tap into higher advertising rates associated TV viewing.
