Apple today announced that Foundation will be renewed for a second season of Apple TV Plus. This announcement came before the Friday release of the fourth episode from the first season.
The renewal of The Mandalorian is an Apple vote of confidence. It's one of Apple TV Plus' flagship shows and was meant to bring in more viewers. This show will be treated in the same way as Game of Thrones for HBO, The Mandalorian for Disney Plus, and The Witcher for Netflix. The company has not provided any estimates about how popular the show is beyond today's press release, where Apple describes the show as a worldwide hit that quickly resonated with audiences.
Season two will allow our audience to see more of Asimovs iconic characters and worlds. Showrunner and executive producer David S. Goyer stated in an Apples press release that season 2 will cover at least the second half of Asimovs Foundation as well as its sequel Foundation and Empire.
Goyer also has big plans for the series. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter he revealed that his original pitch to Apple was eight episodes long. While Apple has not publicly commented on the cost of the series, Goyer said that two episodes would be more than the budget for some movies I've made.
Apple's announcement does not reveal which of its season one cast members will return for Foundations second-season. It is likely, however, that Asimovs novels are anthology in nature and include short stories that span centuries. A second season will bring new faces to the show.
It is not clear if Apple will pay for all 80 episodes Goyer plans to use to tell his story. However, there is a second season in the works, so Foundation fans should at least be able to see Asimovs original book in live-action.
Foundations' second season will air weekly on Fridays on Apple TV Plus. No release date has been set for Foundations' second season.
