Anthony Joshua obsessed by beating Oleksandr Usyk in rematch, says promoter Eddie Hearn

Eddie Hearn, Anthony Joshua's promoter, talks to BBC Sport to discuss Joshua's defeat to Oleksandr Usyk, and the possibility of a rematch in 2022, as the Briton seeks to regain the WBA and WBO world heavyweight titles.
Matchroom Boxing will be hosting an all-British super welterweight bout between Liam Smith & Anthony Fowler on its next show. That fight will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra at 22:02 BST on Saturday 9 October.

Anthony Joshua is still hurting from losing his world heavyweight titles to Oleksandr Uzyk. But, I've never seen him so hungry and determined to win the rematch.

In fact, obsessive is a better term because he has talked about the fight, what he needs and what he needs change in every conversation we have had.

This fight feels very different from the Andy Ruiz loss. This was one of history's biggest upsets at heavyweight. However, the strategy was flawed and he was defeated by one of best pound-for-pound fighters in the country. It's not shameful to lose to Usyk.

Anthony Joshua lost to Oleksandr Uzyk on points in front of 67,000 people at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, 25 September

Many people have commented on the wrong tactics - which I agree with - but it is difficult not to appreciate what Usyk did. AJ was disappointed because he knew he could do better and boxed the wrong bout, but Usyk's performance is exceptional.

However, the Ruiz defeat was something else. It was so shocking that nobody knew what to do. You could see AJ's mind at work trying to beat Usyk. It was almost as if the preparations for the rematch had begun.

I was shocked to see Bob Arum, Tyson Fury's copromoter, saying that AJ should be removed for Fury v Usyk. But I can't even imagine such a scenario in a million.

We will announce the rematch in due time and begin planning with K2 Promotions. March or April would be a good month to start planning for the rematch.

Ukraine, United Kingdom, or Middle East?

Usyk mentioned Kiev, Ukraine, as a possible venue. We will investigate all possibilities. AJ was excited to hear about it when he heard it.

It would be great to do it back here in the UK, and we have received offers from the Middle East. However, we will look at all options for both fighters.

The venue doesn't really make a difference to how AJ fights.

Anthony Joshua lost in the seventh round to Andy Ruiz, an American-Mexican from Mexico. Six months later, he won the rematch in Saudi Arabia on points.

Mental was the challenge at Ruiz's rematch. AJ was shocked at Madison Square Garden by Ruiz, a man we knew could fight. However, everyone else was adamant that AJ was not in good shape.

Although it is easy to overcome this mental obstacle, it can be very difficult to do so strategically. AJ used the right strategy to defeat Ruiz, and he must use the same strategy to beat Usyk - he cannot just stand there trying to outbox a master for 12 rounds. AJ will be more aggressive. It will be an amazing fight.

Although some people may question whether this will affect his legacy, he is still a great heavyweight champion and should be remembered for his 12 past fights.

All of the great heavyweights have suffered defeats.

His legacy was being a two time world champion but also taking on any challenge. He changed the sport in Britain, created some of the most memorable nights in British boxing and sporting history, and inspired a new generation. However, he never gave up on any challenge.

This legacy could be made even more if he wins the third match and becomes a three time world champion.

Wilder to be beaten by Fury again

WBC champion Tyson Fury faces Deontay Wilder in Las Vegas this weekend for their trilogy fight. I believe Fury will win again, this time on points.

Wilder-Fury III was always going to be close to the Usyk-Joshua bout. Wilder is the favourite, but Fury is a strong favorite. Wilder can end any fight at any moment. It's heavyweight boxing, and that's what makes it so exciting.

"The fight that made British boxing great"

Liam Smith (left), a former WBO light middleweight world champion, and Anthony Fowler won an England-wide middleweight gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

On Saturday night, we have an excellent domestic fight: Liam Smith faces Anthony Fowler in a fantastic super-welterweight bout (with live commentary by BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra starting at 22:00 BST).

This is exactly the type of fight that makes British Boxing so great. It's always attractive to see big domestic fights, but seeing two Scousers in action in Liverpool is always special, especially when it's in front of 10,000 people.

It's a crossroads bout. Liam Smith, who was a world champion boxer, will be taking on Anthony Fowler, an amateur sensation who is on his way to becoming a professional world champion.

Fowler, like Smith, loves to get involved and have a good time. Smith prefers to fight close quarters, but Fowler can be very dangerous at close quarters. The fight should go deep. It will be a great showcase of British boxing's strength.
