A man died after being hospitalized for COVID-19 and having been placed on a ventilator. His wife filed suit against the hospital to have him treated with ivermectin.

Jeffrey Smith was the man who was admitted to West Chester Hospital's intensive care unit in July. His wife sued West Chester Hospital in August to get her husband treated with ivermectin. This is a horse dewormer which has become the new hydroxychloroquine. It's a drug that's been favored by anti-vaxxer and far-right crowds, but doesn't seem to be helping coronavirus patients.

Although specific details about Smith's death are scarce, his attorney informed Fox News affiliate Fox19 that Smith died in September. The court order to compel Smith to take ivermectin from Fred Wagshul, a doctor who doesn't effectively combat the coronavirus, was rescinded.

Wagshul is the founder of the Front Line COVID-19 Critical Care Alliance. This group, which promotes ivermectin to be a cure-all for COVID, and MedPage Today reports that it actually believes that it would be unethical not to wait for clinical trials to prove that the drug works.

ABC News affiliate network WSB-TV reports that a judge reversed an earlier ivermectin ordering in September. This was just two weeks after it had been issued. It was because Wagshul hadn't actually seen Smith, and because Wagshul doesn't have privileges at West Chester Hospital.

Although the whole story is tragic, doctors are using it to remind patients that vaccination is the best protection against COVID.

According to Bruce Vanderhoff, Ohio Department of Health director, it is the best option for any of us. It is a preventative but still a treatment option.
