Windows 11 has been officially released. However, if your AMD Ryzen processor is running Windows 11, you may want to delay updating. The company reports that some of its chips could have problems with the new OS, which could lead to performance drops up to 15% in certain cases.
Microsoft and AMD have identified two major issues with Windows 11 Ryzen. First, Windows 11 could increase L3 cache latency by up to three times. AMD claims that this issue can cause 35 percent less performance in most affected apps, while some games could experience performance drops of 1015 percent (AMD specifically addresses those used for eSports).
Windows 11 also has issues with AMD's preferred core technology. This is a technique that aims to shift threads to the fastest core of a processor. AMD warns users that performance problems could occur when CPU-reliant tasks are performed on processors with more cores than 8. This is especially true for processors with over eight cores and 65W TDP.
AMD and Microsoft both confirmed that they are currently investigating the known issues and will be releasing software updates to address them. You might prefer to use Windows 10 while AMD and Microsoft resolve the issue.
