Brazilian footballer charged with attempted murder after kicking referee

After kicking a referee in his head during a match of lower league football, a Brazilian footballer was charged with attempted murder.

After Rodrigo Crivellaro was fouled on Monday, William Ribeiro from Sport Club Sao Paulo attacked him.

Crivellaro was admitted to the hospital after the match against Guarani was stopped in half-time.

Ribeiro was fired and the referee was released from hospital.

Club officials stated that the incident occurred in the year of their anniversary 113 years ago and they are currently evaluating the best course of action.

Sport Club Sao Paulo is located in Rio Grande, 200 mi south of Porto Alegre. They play in the second division in the Rio Grande do Sol state championship.

Guarani won the restarted match by 1-0, according to the state football federation.
