Twitch confirmed that it suffered a significant data breach. Twitch spokesperson said that they can confirm that there has been a breach. Our teams are working quickly to determine the extent of this. As soon as more information becomes available, we will notify the community.
Hackers have leaked data which includes the source code of the company's streaming service, a unreleased Steam competitor from Amazon Game Studios, as well as details about creator payouts. A torrent containing 125GB was uploaded by an anonymous user to the 4chan messaging forum. It claims that it contains Twitch and all its commit history.
We are able to confirm that a breach occurred. Our teams are working quickly to determine the extent of the breach. As soon as more information becomes available, we will notify the community. We appreciate your patience. Twitch (@Twitch), October 6, 2021
This leak is part one. It suggests that there may be more. Although personal information such as creator payments is available, the initial leak does not appear to contain passwords, addresses or email accounts. The leaker seems to have been more concerned with sharing Twitch's company tools and information than any code that could include personal accounts.
However, it is not clear how many data were accessed. Twitch claims it is investigating the security breach and that some users are being requested to change their passwords. We recommend that you change your Twitch password, and enable two-factor authentication, if not already done.
Twitch's leak will have a devastating impact on the game streaming site in any way, and especially for creators who depend on Twitch for their earnings and security. This hack comes after weeks of protests for Twitch's improvement of its service under the #DoBetterTwitch campaign. Twitch streamers took a day off from work in August to protest the lack of action by Twitch against hate raids.
