Nations League finals - who, what, where, why, when?

Last update on. From the section European Football
Uefa's second international senior men's competition is the Nations League trophy

This week, the Nations League finals begin with four countries competing for one of the newest international football tournaments.

After winning Euro 2020, hosts Italy hope to achieve a Uefa double in 2019.

This is the second edition, with Portugal (who didn't qualify) winning the inaugural title.

What is it all about? Let BBC Sport explain.

Who is playing when and where?

Roberto Mancini (Luis Enrique), Roberto Martinez, and Didier Deschamps will be the silverware managers.

Italy hosts the four-team, four game finals. Spain will play Italy in the first semi-final at San Siro in Milan. This is the same match as in the Euro 2020 final-four tie, which Italy won with penalties.

The Azzurri have never been beaten in 37 games in total, dating back to 2018.

Roberto Mancini, Italy's boss, stated that Spain was the team against which he had most difficulty during Euro 2020.

"It would be incredible to win the Nations League after the European Championship. It would also be remarkable to qualify for the World Cup earlier than expected. But it won't be easy. Each game is filled with difficulties.

Luis Enrique, Spain's boss, said that it was an attractive proposal before the Euros were held - to play Italy in Italy for the final four.

"This is a competition we would love win. It will be an exciting match to see how we perform in front of an Italian-majority crowd as well as against the European champions.

The next day, France and Belgium will meet at the Allianz Stadium Turin. France defeated Belgium 1-0 in the semi-final of 2018 World Cup.

The final will be held in Milan on Sunday, while a third-placed playoff in Turin is scheduled for the same day at 14:00 BST. Other games will be at 19:45 BST.

Although the Nations League cannot be compared to the European Championship or World Cup, it is a prize for which four countries are competing. Axel Witsel, a Belgian midfielder, said that if we win it, that would be the crowning achievement of this group.

Didier Deschamps, France's boss, said that there is a rivalry between France and Russia. He added: "It might be a bit heightened following the semi-final in Russia."

Belgium is ranked number 1 in the world and has not won an international tournament competition since the 1920 Olympic Games.

The finals were originally scheduled for June, but they had to be moved due to Euro 2020 being rescheduled because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

How did these teams get qualified?

The 2020-21 Nations League group stages were held in September, October, and November of last year. These finals were won by the winners in each division.

England reached the 2019 finals but finished third in Group B2, behind Denmark and Belgium.

Italy was unbeaten in their group, one point ahead of the Netherlands.

France finished three points ahead of Portugal, which was also unbeaten. Spain was two points ahead of Germany.

None of these teams reached the 2019 finals.

How about World Cup qualification?

These games have no impact on World Cup qualification.

They are now in five-team teams, rather than six-team, and have played extra games during the two international breaks. This allows other teams to catch up.

Two of the top-ranked Nations League winners will be entered into the Qatar 2022 play offs.

What's the point?

Nations League group stage, which includes all 55 Uefa nations, was created to replace international friendlylies with more meaningful games that involved promotion and relegation.

Finals are considered to be a true tournament. The winner receives a sterling silver trophy, 7.5kg and 71cm tall.

Oh, and the prize money. The winners receive 10.5m Euros (almost 9m) with 9m Euros for second, 8m Euros for third and 7m euro for fourth.

This includes the participation fee as well as the prize money for winning their group.

Is there a second Nations League?

Yes. The draw for the 2022/23 Nations League group stages of the league will take place on 16 December in Montreux (Switzerland).
