Canon’s new dual-fisheye EOS R lens is for creating 3D VR content

Canon has unveiled the most bizarre glass ever for its EOS R mirrorless system camera system, a dual 5.2mm fisheye f/2.8. These fisheye lenses measure 60mm in distance and can be used to create 3D VR images. Canon mentions the Oculus Q2 as a possible hardware destination. It is the first digital interchangeable lens capable of capturing stereoscopic 3D 180 VR imagery from a single image sensor.
The EOS R5 can use the lens to capture up to 8K footage. This seems to be the only camera that it will work with. Canon will release a 1.5.0 firmware update to the R5, as well as a Premiere Pro plug in and an independent file conversion app called EOSVR Utility. Canon will make this software subscription-based and calls it the EOS VR System.

The EOS R5 will sell for $3,899. While the lens will set you back $1,999, the EOS R5 will go for $3,899. This combination is a bit more expensive than dedicated VR cameras such as the Insta360 Pro 2 and Canon's solution, but it's not prohibitive. Both the lens and the software will be available in December.
