Yankees, Red Sox and an omen? Massachusetts lottery numbers have spooky connection to wild-card game

Enjoy a trip down the memory lane as Red Sox and Yankees try to add a new chapter to their rivalry on Tuesday night on ESPN. (2:11).
Red Sox and Yankees seek to add another chapter to an already historical rivalry (2:11).

Boston Red Sox fans should hope Tuesday night's Massachusetts State Lottery numbers read 20-0-4 because the previous evening's draw was not so favorable in terms of the team's past.

Monday was the day of Boston's single elimination wild-card match against New York Yankees at Fenway Park. The four balls that appeared to indicate a winner read: 1-9-8.

Retrospectively, it seems that a disclaimer warning superstitious Red Sox fans not to read any further would have been justified before disclosing this eerie bit.

The year 1978 was a significant year in the history of the rivalry between Boston and New York, as those who are familiar with it well.

Both franchises were tied for the division title that season. This was before the advent of the wildcard, so they met at Fenway Park in a tiebreaker to decide who would advance to American League Championship Series. This was the first ever true win-or go-home match between rivals.

After dominating six innings, the Red Sox lead 2-0 in 7th. ... And then Bucky Dent came along.

The Yankees shortstop, a.240 hitter who had only four home runs this season, connected for a three run homer to give New York the lead. The Yankees won the game 5-4 and eventually reached the World Series.

So was born the legend of Bucky F ------ dent.

Boston fans can't take the lottery numbers and omens any more. Dent will be in attendance.

According to @ALevyNYC, Bucky Dent will be attending tonight's Yankees-Red Sox wildcard game at Fenway Park. We are not sure if Bucky will visit the Green Monster seats. Jack Curry (@JackCurryYES October 5, 2021

October baseball is not one to be afraid of the drama.

Tuesday's wild-card matchup marks the fourth meeting between the teams in a win or go-home scenario. The 1978 ALCS was won by the Yankees. Game 7 of that 2003 ALCS was won by the Yankees. Game 7 in the 2004 ALCS was won by the Red Sox. New York and Boston also met in the 1999 ALCS, won by the Yankees. Both series failed to make it to the finals.

It is worth noting that the winner of each Red Sox-Yankees playoff game/tiebreaker has progressed to the World Series. They won it every time, except for the 2003 Yankees (4 out of 5).

Is it possible that it is 8 p.m. ET now?
