After years of being depressed, a woman was finally able to get treatment with small electrical pulses via an electrode placed in her brain.

The experimental neural implant delivers 300 zaps per days and represents a new frontier in the treatment for extreme psychiatric disorders. The Guardian also reports that it has made a huge, unexpected difference in the lives of patients.

Sarah said that her depression was kept at bay and that it has allowed me to rebuild a life worth living. After having her brain zapped, she said that she had laughed out loud for the first times in five years.

According to The Guardian, this is a significant breakthrough in neuromedicine and the first time doctors have shown that severe depression can be treated with a new treatment.

This personalized therapy has never been possible before in psychiatry," Katherine Scangos, University of California, San Francisco clinical psychiatrist, told The Guardian. This is an amazing breakthrough in our understanding of brain function and mental illness.

A large number of patients with depression are not able to take medication. Even though only one patient was tested for the neural implant, it suggests that other treatments may be possible down the line.

Sarah said that I experienced the most intense joy after I received stimulation for the first time. My depression disappeared for a second, and I felt the best.
