James Ward-Prowse replaces injured Kalvin Phillips in England squad for World Cup Qualifiers

After Kalvin Phillips' injury, James Ward-Prowse will replace him in the England squad.
After Leeds' victory over Watford, Phillips was evaluated by medical staff and was deemed unfit.

Ward-Prowse, who scored and was sent off in Southampton's 3-1 loss to Chelsea on Saturday, is currently at St George's Park alongside his England team-mates.

Gareth Southgate's side will play Andorra away this Saturday, before hosting Hungary at Wembley Tuesday, October 12.

Phillips played in seven matches for England in their run to the Euro 2020 final. He also formed a strong partnership with Declan Rice in midfield.

Ward-Prowse was part England's provisional squad before Euro 2020. He played in both warm up friendlies against Austria, and Romania. However, he was removed from the roster for the tournament.

He is late to join Tammy Abraham, Ben Chilwell and Ben Chilwell in the England squad.

Abraham and Chilwell were called to the squad on Monday, four days after Southgate had named his original squad. This was after Reece James suffered an ankle injury.

Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea's head coach, said James' call-up was a "misunderstanding". He joked that he thought the defender was in England water polo because he was swimming in the pool while he recovers from an injury.

With four matches remaining, England is four points ahead of Albania, second in World Cup qualifying group 1.

They will finish their qualifying campaign next month with games against San Marino and Albania at home.

Sky Sports' Ron Walker:

After Abraham's contribution in Roma's 2-0 victory over Empoli on Sunday, it was reported by Italy's Gazzetta del Sport that "the Englishman's stats are stellar". Southgate's England recall was granted.

Although he didn't score, the ex-Chelsea player did assist Henrikh Mkhitaryan when his attempt rebounded off of the woodwork to allow him to slot home. Abraham was denied the goal frame for the sixth time since joining the club in summer. This is in addition to the four goals that he has contributed.

Southgate will be happy with his goal (and near miss) and his contributions further back on the pitch. Abraham's finishing is not the only thing that is impressive about him. His heat map also shows that he is more involved in the game outside of the box.

"There have been signs of vintage Mourinho confidence-boosting, a manager who was very happy with his new arrival." He said, "There are some strikers that can be the best at the pitch even without scoring," before the 24-year-old England recall.

Abraham will have to fight for Harry Kane's place on the international stage in the long-term. His Italian job is yielding dividends, at least for now.
