Khabib Nurmagomedov and Sir Alex Ferguson met at Old Trafford Saturday
Match of the Day pundits stated that they were "very shocked" by Cristiano Ronaldo's exclusion from Manchester United's starting lineup at the weekend. It appears that his former boss Sir Alex Ferguson was also surprised.
Khabib Nurmagomedov, a former champion in the UFC, was interviewed at Old Trafford. The legendary ex-United manager was recorded saying that "you should always begin with your best players".
After Ronaldo had been kept on the bench for the last 57 minutes of United's draw with Everton, it was finally done.
This video was posted to Nurmagomedov’s Instagram. It shows Ferguson suggesting that the Toffees were given an uplift "when they noticed Ronaldo wasn’t playing ..."."
Ferguson was then reminded by Nurmagomedov that Ronaldo had come on in the second period, before the Scot stated that players of his calibre should be started.
Ronaldo looked frustrated and murmured to himself as he stormed off the pitch at full time.
Former England and Arsenal striker Ian Wright stated on Match of the Day, "When Cristiano Ronaldo is available, you need to create a team and structure around his needs so that it can work for him."
"If you have him in your team, a match-winner, and you don't make it possible for him to play in there, to do his job, he's going be walking off the pitch like that."
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, United boss, defended his decision not to take Portugal captain at 36 years old.
Solskjaer said, "Me and he we understand more than experts."
It's all about choosing the right moment to play him or not. Although he isn't a young puppy, he is still a professional and ready to go. He came to work today with energy.
In the meantime, Mike Phelan, United assistant manager, has signed a new agreement with the club that will last until 2024.
Phelan was part of Ferguson's coaching staff before returning to Old Trafford in December 2018, when Solskjaer was appointed as caretaker manager.
United is also trying to secure extended contracts for first-team coaches Michael Carrick, and Kieran McKenna.
