New York Jets safety Marcus Maye facing charges from DUI arrest in February

FLORHAM PARK (N.J.) -- Marcus Maye, safety for the New York Jets, is facing DUI arrest and a car accident that took place Feb. 22 in Fort Lauderdale. According to Broward County court records, Maye was arrested.
Maye could be suspended for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. This arrest was not reported previously by the media. According to court records, Maye's attorney is scheduled for a Zoom hearing on Oct. 20, between the state attorney and Maye.

League policy states that failure to report an incident can lead to discipline.

According to the booking report, Maye, age 28, was charged with driving while under the influence as well as two misdemeanors, DUI/damage of property and person, and leaving the scene after a crash. He was released on a $1,500 bond.

Brian McCarthy, a spokesperson for the NFL, stated that the league was reviewing the matter in accordance with its personal-conduct policy. The Jets did not know about the arrest.

A Jets spokesperson told ESPN Monday that they would not comment on any pending legal matter.

Erik Burkhardt was Maye's agent and stated in a statement to ESPN that it was an ongoing legal matter. Our attorney advised us not to comment. It will be resolved quickly, and we are optimistic. We are looking forward to Marcus returning to the field as soon as possible."

Maye was driving alone in a 2018 Mercedes and crashed into the Volvo's left rear while traveling north on the Florida Turnpike around 7:33 p.m. According to the traffic citation, there were no injuries. However, Jamila Abraham, Belle Glade, Florida, filed a civil lawsuit and is seeking more than $30,000 in damages.

According to court documents, it was Maye's first DUI offense.

Two weeks prior to Maye's vote by teammates as the Jets MVP in 2020, the Jets gave Maye the franchise tag. Sources told ESPN that the rule gave both sides until July 15th to reach a long-term agreement. However, they never reached an agreement.

Maye has signed a $10.6 million one-year contract to pay the tag.

At a news conference on March 3, Joe Douglas, general manager of the organization, stated that Maye was being kept "long-term" by the organization. Burkhardt criticised the organization via Twitter at the time for not "taking care of their best player."

Maye is currently recovering from an ankle injury he sustained in Week 3. He was forced to miss Sunday's overtime victory against the Tennessee Titans, 27-24. He is expected to be out for three to four more weeks.

Burkhardt last week tweeted that Maye would be in good health by the Nov. 2, NFL trading deadline. This fueled speculation that the safety want to be removed.

Maye was a second-round draft pick in 2017. He is also the longest-tenured Jets player. He has been in 57 games, all starts, and has six interceptions.
