Huge Oil Spill Strikes Off Coast of California

Huntington Beach was the site of 126,000 gallons crude oil leakage.
Horrible Spill

Southern California is currently facing an oil spillage that occurred off Huntington Beach's coast on Friday night or Saturday morning.

According to The Associated Press, 126,000 gallons worth of crude oil leaked from an underwater pipeline owned by Amplify Energy. Authorities were scrambling for information and to contain the spillage while minimizing ecological damage. Experts say the damage is the worst in the region's recent history. It has already engulfed beaches and wildlife habitats with oil, possibly shutting them down for months and causing environmental destruction.

Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley explained to the AP that vapors in the atmosphere can give you the flavor in your mouth.

Red Alert

According to The Los Angeles Times, the oil has already reached nearby marshlands. Experts warn that the oil could cause damage for several months.

The LA Times reports that authorities have taken steps to prevent more oil from entering the wetlands. However, some experts believe the damage has already been done. Amplify Energy also shut down its offshore platforms and suction-drained their pipeline to prevent any further oil from leaking while authorities try to contain the situation.

Huntington Beach Mayor Kim Carr stated to the AP that this oil spillage is one of the most difficult situations in a year filled with incredibly difficult issues. We will do everything we can to ensure the safety and health of our residents and visitors as well as our natural habitats.
