Zach Wilson throws 2 touchdown passes to the Jets, one for 53 yards, giving them a lead over the Titans. (0:55).
EAST RUTHERFORD (N.J.) -- After 15 quarters, rookie quarterback Zach Wilson finally showed the playmaking ability that prompted New York Jets to pick him with the second pick of the NFL draft.
Wilson was able to step up in the fourth quarter at MetLife Stadium and throw two touchdown passes to help the Jets win a 27-24 overtime victory over the Tennessee Titans.
Two third-down passes by Wilson set up Matt Ammendola’s 22-yard field goal. This was the Jets' first win. On the next possession, the Titans failed to make a field goal.
Wilson finally came alive after struggling for three-plus quarters. He displayed elusiveness and arm strength and connected on 53- and 54-yard passes outside the pocket. The latter was a scoring touchdown to Corey Davis, a former Titans wide receiver. He also found Jamison Crowder with a 3-yard touchdown pass.
Wilson ran a bootleg and held the ball for Davis' touchdown. It was a schoolyard-type play. Davis finished with four catches and 111 yards. He also boxed out safety Breon borders in the end zone, and then threw the rainbow pass. Wilson had a slow start, with an interception early in the game. He ended up with 297 passing yards and 21-for-34 efficiency. With 2:23 remaining in the fourth quarter, Wilson could have won it but missed an open Davis on third-and-10.
The Jets trailed 9-10 and 17-10 in the fourth quarter. Wilson scored on consecutive drives and then got hot. This was an incredible outburst considering that the Jets had only scored 20 points in their first three games.
Wilson's signature play was a 54 yard completion to Keelan Cole, wide receiver. This set up a field goal that gave the Jets their first lead of the season. They were the last team to have a lead for the second consecutive year.
On a broken play, Cole received the long ball that traveled 57 yards. According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Wilson was pushed from the pocket and he sprinted 26 yards to his right. Cole was behind three-deep coverage when he ran the ball to Wilson.
Ammendola scored a 27-yard field kick to give the Jets a 10-9. Derrick Henry's 1-yard run gave the Titans the lead back. The Titans won 17-10 with the 2-point conversion.
Wilson continued to fire and led the Jets on a four-play, touchdown drive of 77 yards. This included a 43-yard pass interference penalty against the Titans. Crowder connected with Wilson twice on that drive for 29 yards and a 3 yard touchdown to tie the score. Crowder was making his season debut.
