TP-Link Archer GX90 AX6600 Review: Game in the Fast Lane

The new TP-Link Archer GX90 is a tri-band router designed for gamers. It supports Wi-Fi 6 as well as a host of other features. Its striking design and ability to prioritize gaming on a 5-GHz band with 4.8 Gbps tops clearly indicate its intent. However, you don't need to be a gamer in order to enjoy this router. TP-Link adds software options like parental controls and antivirus to the package, which is typically charged by manufacturers for a monthly subscription.
The TP-Link Archer GX90, AX6600, is a substantial investment at $250. However, this router performed better than many comparable priced options in my testing, even expensive mesh systems.

Robot Spider

The bulky, bulky creature is equipped with eight large antennas. It also sports an attractive red and black paint job that screams robotic spider. The router can cover an area of approximately four bedrooms and provide Wi-Fi coverage. You may prefer to conceal this router, as it will not blend in with your decor unless you are a Sith Lord.

It measures 8 inches square and has a 2.5-Gbps WAN/LAN Port, three Gigabit WAN/LAN ports, and two USB ports (1 USB 3.0 and 1 USB 2.0), that can be used to connect media or backup servers. The device is indicated by a small triangular light at the top.

It's easy to set up. Install the antennas, plug in power, connect the modem to the 2.5Gbps port and then install the Tether app. You can also set it up from a browser. This was one of the easiest router installations that I've ever done. It took me less than five minutes to get up and running.

Tether is simple to use. The main screen displays connected clients at a glance. You can also choose to activate Trend Micro's antivirus protection, which includes a malicious-content filter and intrusion prevention. You can access the QoS controls via Game Accelerator. You can choose to prioritize online activity via Gaming, Streaming or Surfing or chatting. Or, you can create a custom rule. Gaming is not the only one who can use the fast lane.

The Clients tab displays the band for each connection. Tap on any device to view more data or make them a priority. This is useful if you have limited bandwidth and a busy household.

The HomeCare tab provides parental controls. You can create individual profiles, assign age filters and set bedtimes and time limits. Each profile's Insights entry gives you a full history of online activity from the week before.

The tools tab is the last tab of the app. Here you can create a guest network and split your network bands. You can also schedule reboots and look into diagnostics. You can access the web-management page from a browser to learn more about settings like NAT or DHCP server.

Speed is essential

While there are many things to consider when buying a router, everyone wants one that delivers Wi-Fi throughout their home at the fastest speed possible. The TP-Link Archer GX90 is a reliable router.
