Paris Saint-Germain fell to their first defeat of the season, losing 2-0 at Stade Rennais. Lionel Messi continued his quest for a first league goal.
Rennes won thanks in part to goals by Flavian Tait and Gaetan Labourde on each side. This ended PSG's eight-game winning streak in the league.
PSG was beaten by Lille in the preseason trophy for champions. However, they remained at the top of the table with 24 point, six more than second-place RC Lens who beat Stade de Reims 2-0 Friday. Rennes moved up to 7th place with 12 points.

Five days after a remarkable win over Manchester City, Messi scored his first goal for the club. PSG started to play lively but lost its sharpness when Neymar attempted a close-range shot over the bar in 22 minutes. Messi's 25-yard free kick hit the crossbar and, despite his good combination with Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, PSG failed to break the deadlock.
Rennes, having less than 72 hours to recover from beating Vitesse Arnhem on Thursday in the Europa League, decided to go ahead with the second half in a clinical manner. Laborde scored his sixth goal of this season, volleying in from Kamaldeen Sulemana’s cross.
PSG failed to score a single goal in the first period and were left cold after the interval when Tait scored from Laborde's goal.
In the 76th minute, Neymar was replaced by MauroIcardi, but the Argentine failed inspire PSG, who failed to score in the second period.
PSG suffered their first away league loss in eight months, but Rennes remained calm as the final stages approached.
