Tottenham 2-1 Aston Villa: Hojbjerg finish and Targett own goal give Spurs much-needed win

Last update on. From the section Premier League
Tottenham scored a crucial league win when Hojbjerg scored the first goal of the season.

Tottenham put on their best league performance since beating Manchester City in the opening game. They ended a string of three consecutive league defeats by beating a stubborn Aston Villa.

Spurs were humbled by Arsenal, north London's rival in defeat. However, they overcame a slow start to put on a show that was far from flawless but still displayed a better defensive organisation and attacking edge.

Son Heung-min provided two assists and was bright as usual. Lucas Moura looked sharp, Harry Kane, fresh from his 20-minute hat trick against Mura, was more involved in final third than he was of late.

They were made to work, however, by Villa's side, who didn't panic when they fell behind to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s calmly-taken opening midway through the second half.

With just 20 minutes remaining, their hard work and perseverance paid off. Oli Watkins scored his first goal of this season with a superb low cross from Danny Ings.

Their joy was short-lived, however, as Son accelerated past Kortney Haus and provided a fantastic low ball that was collected into his net by Matt Targett, who was under pressure from Moura.

Spurs had many chances to win the game but couldn't convert. The most notable was Emiliano Martinez's save to deny Kane his first league goal.

The England striker has failed to score in six of his six Premier League appearances. This is the longest streak of scorelessness in the competition since 2015-16 when he scored in six of his six first-half games.

Nuno Espirito Santo's team is now eighth with 12 points. This is two points and one point more than Villa.

Tottenham shows determination and ability to win big

Tottenham was desperate for this result and the process that brought it about.

They won all three of their wins, with a scoreline of 1-0. They never suffered a defeat in the league campaign to gain points.

They are now able to tick this significant psychological milestone off their list.

They also deserved it, as they settled into the game after a first 15 minutes where both sides gave away the ball to take control. They made more chances and could have been out before Watkins sent panic through the stadium with just 20 minutes remaining.

While the wounds of last Sunday's humiliation at Emirates will take some time to heal, performances against Villa will help to silence the increasing number of critics who are questioning Nuno's ability to manage and the performance of some of his players.

Smith: "Outstanding Son was the Difference" - Smith's reaction to Villa loss at Spurs

Villa are no mugs. They proved it in their victory over Manchester United last weekend. They can't complain about the loss.

They never really had a grip on it and lost parity soon after fighting back to win it. This also meant that they forfeited the chance to test the nerves of their home team.
