PSG's Lionel Messi scored one goal in four matches.

Rennes ended Paris St-Germain's 100% start to Ligue 1 as Lionel Messi suffered the first defeat since joining the club.

Two quick goals were scored by Flavien Tait and Gatetan Laborde for the hosts.

Despite Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe starting, Mauricio pochettino's team didn't have a single shot on goal.

This is PSG's first defeat in Ligue 1 since April when they were beaten last season by Lille.

Rennes scored the first goal on 44 minutes, when Laborde converted Kamaldeen Sulemana’s brilliant cross.

Tait quickly added another soon after the restart, with a sweep finish in the bottom corner.

Mbappe had scored a goal in the first half but it was ruled out by the video assistant referee (VAR) as offside.

Frenchman now has five games without scoring in any of the competitions.

PSG were spared more damage after Ruddy Buquet, the referee, reversed his decision to give Rennes a penalty because Achraf Hakimi was fouled on Laborde. He checked the pitchside monitor.

Neymar missed a goal in the first half, and Idrissa Gueye shot wide of the post. But Lionel Messi was close for PSG as he scored from a free kick to hit the crossbar.

Bruno Genesio's Rennes team had won only twice in Ligue 1 before Sunday's match, but they were clinical in front and scored two goals from their four shots.

This result places PSG on top of Ligue 1 with 24 points. Lens is six points behind, and Rennes moves up to seventh.
