With six minutes left, Timo Werner brought Chelsea back in front
Thomas Tuchel's team beat consecutive defeats to win over Southampton, and Chelsea scored two goals in the final minutes of the match. They are now at the top of Premier League.
Ben Chilwell and Timo Werner scored in the final six minutes, after Saints were reduced to 10 men by captain James Ward-Prowse's poor challenge on Jorginho.
After nine minutes Trevoh Chalobah, an Academy product, put the hosts ahead. He swooped at the back post to head his second goal of the season.
The dominant Chelsea scored twice more goals in the first period, but Romelu Lukaku was flagged offside. Werner's header was also ruled out after Cesar Azpilicueta fouled Kyle Walker-Peters during the build-up.
The hosts were penalized for not expanding their advantage when Tino Livramento, a former Chelsea player was tripped in the box by Chilwell. Ward-Prowse then fired the penalty.
The visitors couldn't hold on to a point after the loss of their skipper. Martin Atkinson, referee, upgraded the yellow card to a straight-red when he viewed the pitchside monitor.
After their win in the Champions League, Chelsea lost 1-0 against Juventus in the Champions League.
Chelsea's bounce back is a triumphant moment for Werner
Since Tuchel's January appointment, Chelsea have not lost back-to-back Premier League games. This speaks volumes about the Blues' consistency as under former Paris St-Germain manager.
Despite having struggled with creativity in the last third of their previous two outings the energetic Werner was included among five changes as Chilwell & Loftus-Cheek made the first league starts of the new season.
The German forward finally scored the goal he had been working so hard for, when he met Azpilicueta’s low cross in closing stages. This was his first goal of campaign before Chilwell secured victory in the 89th minutes with a fine strike.
After a dominating start, the hosts were denied Werner by Alex McCarthy, Saints goalkeeper, and Oriol Romeu's superb sliding block. Werner then saw his header overruled and disallowed by the video assistant referee.
After Azpilicueta was fouled by referee Atkinson, the decision was made to book Tuchel. This feeling of injustice was further compounded when Saints were levelled.
Ward-Prowse's red cards proved crucial as McCarthy made an outstanding save to deny Werner. Chelsea, however, were able use the extra space to end Saints' resistance.
Ralph Hasenhuttl's Southampton are, however, without a win in the October international break after seven Premier League games. This includes nine of the last season. It is their worst run under the Austrian.
