Alex Jones ordered to pay damages to families of Sandy Hook victims

Alex Jones, a right-wing conspiracy theorist who created Infowars, was ordered to compensate two families for damages suffered in the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting.
After Jones failed to produce evidence supporting his claim that the filming was a fake flag, District Judge Maya Guerra Gamble of Texas made the ruling. In two lawsuits filed in 2018, the court ordered Jones to show proof supporting his claims. He had many years to present the evidence but he did not. Gamble argued that other penalties were not effective to justify her default rulings.

Gamble stated that a series of judicial admonishments and monetary penalties have failed to deter the abuse. Gamble wrote that the Court also looked at whether other remedies might be more effective in deterring abuse. This Court considered Mr. Jones' public threats and general bad faith approach towards litigation.

Jones' comments that the shooting was a ploy to get attention, despite the fact the shooting resulted in the deaths of 26 people, including 20 children in 2012, have been sued by nine families. Jones was forced to pay thousands in court costs and families. Jones' lawyer has stated that Jones now believes the shooting was a hoax. The families claim that the shooting was a hoax.

Gamble's default judgments in recent years are very rare. According to HuffPost, the judgment means that a jury will be convened to decide how much Gamble owes plaintiffs. The date for jury selection has not yet been announced.
