A new lava feature has been discovered at the Cumbre Vieja volcano in Canary Islands. A fissure opened on the volcano's flanks Friday, after it had been erupting for almost two weeks.
This rupture has released more lava that could be added to the steady stream of lava flowing into the Atlantic. Two streams of lava had been flowing from the fissure, which is located approximately a quarter mile (400m) from the main volcano. It is possible for lava streams to become lava rivers. There is also the possibility that new lava could threaten more populated areas of the island.
