The Key Facts
According to the New York Times data and Reuters data, Covid-19 has claimed more lives than any other country since the outbreak. According to data compiled by NBC News in September, 58,000 of these deaths occurred in September. This makes September one of the most deadly months of the pandemic. According to the New York Times data, deaths have fallen 2% and hospitalizations 26% respectively in the past two weeks. However, numbers are still high in some states and are on the rise. The number of Alaskan cases has risen 75% over the past two weeks. Alaska is currently experiencing the worst outbreak in terms of death and case rates (170 per 100,000) and (1.72 per 100,000). The number of cases has risen 29% in Maine, and 25% in North Dakota in the same period. In North Dakota, the number hospitalized Covid-19 patients rose 22% and 18% respectively.
Important Background
Covid-19 is among the most deadly events in American history. It has killed more people than many wars, including World War I, Vietnam, and more Americans than the 1918 flu pandemic (also known as Spanish Flu). However, this was less deadly when the smaller population is taken into account. The introduction of the highly infectious delta strain of vaccines in summer led to an increase in cases despite the availability of safe, effective, and free vaccines. Unvaccinated patients account for the majority of hospitalizations, and almost all deaths due to Covid-19. The healthcare system has spent at least $5.7 million in the past three months. A huge increase in demand for the few medications that are licensed in the U.S. to treat Covid-19 has led to nationwide shortages and rationing, with some areas prioritizing unvaccinated patients.
